An Important Dissertation on Square Kufic

Tehniyat Majeed completed a Ph.D. dissertation on Square Kufic calligraphy at St. Hugh's College, University of Oxford in 2006.

This is the most comprehensive scholarly work on the subject I know of. It is an excellent work of scholarship and will advance the level of discussion and research on Square Kufic calligraphy for years to come.

The work title is "The Phenomenon of the Square Kufic Script: The Cases of Ilkhanid Isfahan and Bahri Mamluk Cairo." There are five chapters with the following titles:

Chapter One: What is Square Kufic? An Historical Survey and Analysis of the Physical Evidence.
Chapter Two: What is Square Kufic? Terminology, Origins, and Conceptual Frameworks.
Chapter Three: Square Kufic Inscriptions in Ilkhanid Isfahan: The Case of the Buq'a-i Pir-i Bakran.
Chapter Four: Square Kufic Inscriptions in Bahri Mamluk Cairo: The case of the Qubba al-Mansuriyya.
Chapter Five: The Phenomenon of the Square Kufic Script During the Ilkhanid and Bahri Mamluk Period: Comparisons and Correlations.

I hope this work will be published soon so those of us eager to learn more about the subject will be able to benefit from its scholarship and insights. Posted by M.S.
