SQUARE KUFI PROJECTS
Survey of Square Kufic Use in Contemporary Art
Thank you for taking the time to review and answer this survey. I am a doctoral candidate in the Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Near & Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle. My dissertation examines the use of Square Kufic calligraphy in contemporary art. I am especially interested in how contemporary artists, designers, and calligraphers relate to the history of Arabic calligraphy and how it influences or challenges their work. I plan also to review the use of this style of calligraphy in print and other media. Although Square Kufic is a style of Arabic script calligraphy, there are many examples in Latin script that follow the same principles and will be briefly mentioned in my work as well. The purpose of this survey is to collect information about artwork
and design projects that incorporates Square Kufic calligraphy for
possible inclusion in my dissertation. I would appreciate your help
in completing the following survey. Your responses would offer a significant
contribution to my ongoing research. It is not necessary to respond
to every question, and even short responses are valuable. All your
responses will be credited to you in the final document. Mamoun Sakkal |
