GUEST GALLERY ARTIST FOR SUMMER 2000
Hasan Al Quds Open Type font
I designed this modern Kufi style typeface for the first time in 2000 as a small
TTF font using CorelDraw and Fontographer3 for PC computer. Before I knew Mamoun
Sakkal, his font Sakkal Seta had fascinated and allured me. This font provided
me with inspiration for designing a good modern Kufi style like it.
Supported and supervised by Mamoun Sakkal in 2001, I revised the design with
many improvements in FontLab4. Then, I expanded it to include Arabic, Farsi,
Urdu, Uighur and other languages that use the Arabic script. Finally, I converted
it to Open Type using Ms Volt.
This is a font that is appropriate for headlines, creating logos and book titles.
I decided to dedicate my first font to Al Quds, our holy capital and lovely
city, which I pray always to be the safest as I pray for my font to be safe
as well.
I feel quite happy to complete this font despite the many obstacles I face such
as the terrible condition in Gaza, the shortage of resources, and lack of copyright
protection. I look forward to continuing my practice in type design and to seeing
my font used in many fascinating applications.
Special thanks, appreciation and acknowledgement are due to Mamoun Sakkal who
has always encouraged me to follow my ambition, taught me to respect other designers'
work, and is still extending to me his great help without which my font would
never appear in this condition.
